Delicate sandwiches, delicious home-made cakes and freshly baked scones served with traditional Cornish clotted cream and mouth-watering fruity strawberry jam. Alongside a warming pot of tea or cup of coffee.

Did you know that despite being a very British affair Afternoon Tea Week is now celebrated globally and is becoming increasingly popular every year?
The history of Afternoon Tea goes back to Victorian times when in the 1800’s Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford who, at the time was a close friend of Queen Victoria and a prominent figure within London society complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. Basically, she was hungry!
She wanted something small to satisfy her hunger, nothing too large, just something to see her through till dinner time which was taken late then, usually around 8pm. The Duchess ordered tea with bread and butter to help stave off her hunger.
When the Duchess asked friends to join her, the idea soon spread. Upper-class and society women would change into elegant long gowns, gloves and hats especially for their Afternoon Tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. Once summer came around, these ladies started taking Afternoon Tea in their stately home gardens to show off. Moving their Afternoon Tea outside meant everyone in the house could enjoy it including the Lords and gentlemen. Tea was a fine delicacy at this time and the people drinking it wanted the whole world to know they could afford it.
The popular social occasion of Afternoon Tea became very fashionable and is the tradition that we know and love today, though we tend to have it more as a treat or celebration with friends and family. Here at China Fleet we do our Traditional Afternoon Tea, plus upgraded versions too with our Prosecco Afternoon Tea and even G & Tea; Gin Afternoon Tea.
Of course, you no longer have to change into long gowns, hats and gloves to enjoy Afternoon Tea, but you can if you want to!
