Even the healthiest of people get sick every now and then. However, by fine-tuning certain aspects of your life, such as diet and stress management, you can help strengthen your immune system against bacteria and viruses that cause conditions like the common cold and flu.
Even when your body is telling you to hibernate, you can keep healthy and fit, no matter what the weather.
Exercise
The good news is that regular moderate-intensity exercise has many benefits to the immune system. Those who regularly exercise have fewer illnesses and less systemic inflammation. Regular physical activity can strengthen your immune system and help your body fight off infections and viruses.
Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity for three days a week. This can include walking, biking, yoga, swimming, gym workouts or exercise classes. See our Timetables for our latest range of exercise classes or our swimming pool opening times here.
Lower your stress level
Chronic stress can affect your immune system, decreasing its effectiveness. When under stress, the body increases the production of cortisol, this is a hormone that helps the body deal with stressful situations. To keep your stress in check, incorporate a relaxing practice like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing into your daily routine. Try our yoga, Tai Chi, Body Balance or Pilates classes.
Or how about taking some time out in our Aqua Spa or having a relaxing massage in our Barn Spa?
Eat a healthy diet
Eating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet is another way to boost your immune system so it can fight off viruses. This includes eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which contain vitamins and antioxidants to promote good health. You should also reduce your intake of sugar, fat, and processed foods, and choose lean meats.
See our Brasserie Menu and have a night off from cooking. We’ve got lots of tasty, healthy options including vegan, vegetarian and low calorie.
Keep well and active this winter.
